The 2011 Edition of the Airway Lanes Award Scores Tournament is over, and everyone has been paid. All I have left to do is upload the pictures and update the Financial Report to the USBC and on the web site. The Tournament was high scoring this year. John Tovar had the High Game in the qualifying rounds, with a 298. Ed Kaer had a 815 in the qualifying.
In the optional Doubles event, yours truly had a 711/761 and was pair with Dave Paull (734/779) and Mike Caples (741/774) to cash the top two places. I can't find my paper work but I think Doubles paid $160 & $80. The optional Singles were won by Jessica O'Halloran (693/795) & Dave Paull (734/779). Guessing again, Singles paid $80 & $40. I'll update when I find the sheet.
About Ed, after the 815, which made him the top qualifier, he came back with a resounding 170 game in the head to head. That was enough to sqeak out a 1 pin victory in Round One, win $50, and move on to Round Two in the head to head matches. Also during Round 1, Mike Atkins had to finish with a strike in the 10th to eke out his victory by only a few pins (201).
Ed went all the way to the end to face Mike Atkins. Mike won this years Tournament with a 234 - 214 victory, and gets his name up on the wall for the year.
Pictures to follow soon!
How do you qualify for the "Shootout"? By rolling a 300, 299 or 298 game, a 750 series (women - 700) or better, or winning an 11 strikes in a row award (women averaging under 200, a 10 strike game). These awards must be won at Airway, and you must have a combined total of 30 league games at Airway. Doing the same at another center will not qualify you to enter (and they don't do this!).
All bowlers will then roll 3 games with handicap, based on the final average of the league in which they quailfied from. The top 32 will make the cut. These people will bowl head to head, actual, matches. The top qualifier will compete against # 32, #2 vs. #31, etc. If you win your match, you get a $50 envelope, and keep going. If you lose you are done.
This event takes place the 3rd week of May, and wraps around the Champion of Champions Tournament.
