Airway, for many years, used to give away $300 for the first 300 game of the year, and $800 for the first 800 series of the year.  This started when 300's were rare, and 800's even rarer.  With the explosion of high scores, I found these being won in early September - sometimes on the first night of bowling!  That took out a lot of the fun waiting for it to happen.  Making a change about 2005, I decided to start the "Airway Award Scores Shootout"  This awarded $600 to the winner, and has a total purse of $2200.  16 people are guaranteed to cash, and collect their winnings as they win their matches.  The finals match is always exciting as people hung around to cheer for the competitors.  It is like on TV -- and every shot gets a lot of yelling and screaming!!

Airway, because of Frank, had been getting involved with soft tip darts by first sponsoring leagues, then hosting them.  Frank added tournaments like the Friday Luck of the Draw, then several other tournaments.  In 2010, Frank put together a soft tip dart tournament that started the Thursday after the lanes Champ of Champs Tournament finished up.  You have to go to the 2010's tab for the rest of this story.

In the early 2000's, Airway started "Going Green".  We didn't generate any electricity, but we did start conserving in earnest.  While I had always been conscious of the electric bill, I really started getting in to it.  When I came back from college in the early '70's, our electric bills ran between $4500 and $5500 a month.  Now, over 40 years later, they are still at that level, and often less.

"Going Green" included insulating the roof - over 32,000 sq. feet.  That was expensive, and not done all at once, but it was worth it.  In the winter, we need to turn off the heat by 3:00pm or the night leagues will roast.  Other things were installing programable thermostats, off/on timers on the TV's (we have 80+ TV's in the center), replacing incandescent lighting - first with flourescent, and now ith CFL's.  Next will be LED lights.  Replacing air filters once a week.  Adding in motion detectors helped a lot also.  Even using a air pot for the coffee.  That turns off a 1500w burner.

Airway is presently on a program of replacing the T12 flourescent lights with T8's.  They are being done a few at a time - that is why there is sometimes different colors over the lanes.

Even the employees are getting in to it now.  Many times you will see the office lights off if no one is in that room.
