I have concentrated so much on the first two decades, that the later years have suffered in the retelling. I will be adding bits & pieces to the 90's as I remember them, so here goes!
I was was dabbling in the internet during this period. I was able to get a 2400k modem, and thought I was hot stuff. I never, ever, thought about a website for Airway. As it was, email was too slow to allow for a lot of mailing to be done. At that time, I was with Prodigy - OH - WoW!. Then along came AOL. I quickly jumped onto that and created airwaylanes@aol.com. No website, but at least I was able to email bowlers on a regular basis. That went on for about 2 years, then I learned about creating my own website with a website provider. It was pretty cool. I could have 6 (yup, count 'em) pages of my very own, so I created www.airwaylanes.com. The website was only six pages, but no limit on length - so I started getting in to that. After about 1 year, the provider was offering up to TEN pages, at a discount, so I got in to that also. The AIrway relationship with AOL went on for a lot of years. By the late '90's, my Airway email list had grown to over 1200 contacts. Because they were so well received, I got into the habit of emailing once a month. Every once in a great while, I would send two in a month. After one email, though, I was locked out of AOL. At that time they had a contact number to find out why. When I called them, they said that I was a "spammer" so they shut me down. When I explained that I had been emailing my customers, once a month, for several years, without incident or complaint, they relented and put me back on line. Airway Lanes was classified as a "bulk emailer" by AOL but my email address was re-instated. That was important because teh AOL address was my contact address on the website.
Going in to the 2000's, my provider was getting more generous and started offering almost unlimited web pages. My site kept growing & growing. It is presently publishing in excess of 85 pages. There are another 30 pages saved and hidden that I re-use from time to time.
In May of 2005 (or 06), my email address had grown to over 1500 people. I sent out another mail to all of them. Then I realized I had sent something in error and remailed the correction. When I tried to use it again, about 20 minutes later, I was denied access. This time, AOL had NO options for appeal, other than a written letter to the Chicago office. I did that, but never heard back.
In the meantime, I took advantage of the providers web site solution and bowlingisbest@airwaylanes.com was born. That now became the contact link for the website. However, the damage was done and it was months before I was able to restore my address book.
The Airway website is maintained by myself - sometimes getting 3 or 4 changes a day. The site has the Home page, pages for bowling, darts, comedy, volleyball, the Deli, and just a ton of other information. I think it is probably the largest bowling alley website anywhere. It has graphics, sign up sheets, payyment contacts, and newest of all, an interactive calendar that shows all of the activities at Airway. It averages about 100 hits a day now, and is well over the 100,000 mark.
